Poetry Prompt: Shapeshifting
Poets: Carol Forrester and Blaidh Nemorlith
Shapeshifter by Carol Forrester
You were water
pouring yourself into shapes
that seemed appropriate.
I met you countless times
and not once could I pin your face
against the others that you wore.
It was a fresh introduction,
a new personality,
warmth and kindness one day,
ice and silence another.
The worst encounters
were out of control,
drunk or high,
spilling yourself until you split
and I watched you scramble
for the masks lost
just so no one would see
the child underneath.
pouring yourself into shapes
that seemed appropriate.
I met you countless times
and not once could I pin your face
against the others that you wore.
It was a fresh introduction,
a new personality,
warmth and kindness one day,
ice and silence another.
The worst encounters
were out of control,
drunk or high,
spilling yourself until you split
and I watched you scramble
for the masks lost
just so no one would see
the child underneath.
Shapeshifter by Blaidh Nemorlith
Picasso painted him
with a brush he bought from
the same shop where
Warhol got his drugs.
Painted face like canvas and
instead of manifesting art
conjured the saddest of frowns
the cutest of smiles
and the most pointy burrow when making an angry gripe.
He used a whole pack of wet wipes
but could not correct
his creations capability
of acting the chameleon
and changing shape depending on chemical reaction.
In the end he gave up.
with a brush he bought from
the same shop where
Warhol got his drugs.
Painted face like canvas and
instead of manifesting art
conjured the saddest of frowns
the cutest of smiles
and the most pointy burrow when making an angry gripe.
He used a whole pack of wet wipes
but could not correct
his creations capability
of acting the chameleon
and changing shape depending on chemical reaction.
In the end he gave up.
